Project Title / Description

Joint authorship of a book published by Addison Wesley entitled Distributed Database Systems.

The idea for the book grew out of several years of collaborative research on Distributed Database Systems during the 1980's. This research was funded by the EU under various programmes including the Multiannual Programme, COST 11bis and DELTA.

Project Title / Description

Formation of ultrashallow junctions using diffusion from a doped oxide and rapid thermal processing.

The project was sponsored by Intel and will conclude in 2000 after a period of four years.
A doctoral student was supported during this period. As TCD does not have RTP equipment the student travelled regularly to Belfast for periods of one to two weeks. Samples were prepared in advance and following processing in Queen's these were analysed in TCD. Some of the diagnostic techniques available in Dublin were not available in Belfast and a number of TCD personnel performed tasks such as Raman Spectroscopy for Queen's. To date there have been three joint publications and another four are either submitted or in preparation. One of the most significant benefits was the interaction with researchers in Belfast. Normally this took the form of meetings three to four times annually when the doctoral students (on this project and others) would make chart presentation of their work.

Development Potential

As the skills in Raman Spectroscopy developed in TCD other opportunities became apparent and work is beginning on another collaborative project on stress analysis in structures with deep vias.

Centre for teaching computing (CTC)

The CTC provides support for academics involved in teaching computers, in sharing materials, in course development and in addressing common issues. Project started in January 1993. Subsequently expanded to launch European Thematic Network for Computing, supported by European Commission.

Funding from nonexchequer sources of £300,000 for period 19951998. EU funding approx. £30,000.
Launched first European Conference Series on Teaching Computing (1993present).
