Project Title / Description

Introduction to Third Level Teaching: Developing and Implementing A Common Core Curriculum.

Coordination provided by Trinity College Dublin in association with the reference group nominated by participating institutions.

This project is a direct outcome of the National Colloquium on University Teaching and Learning: Policies and Practice held on 12 December, 1998.

The project is sponsored by the Irish Universities Training Network. Funding was received from the Higher Education Authority via Training of Trainers Programme (1999) which is a subset of the European Social Fund.

The project is based on the desire to provide comprehensive initial teaching development for new academic staff in the Republic which will provide appropriate support as they encounter the range of teaching roles from course design to classroom teaching and assessment.

The process for project development is in five parts:
1. Visits to the University of Ulster and Queen's University Belfast to learn from their experience of providing comprehensive initial teaching development for their newly appointedstaff (completed November, 1999).
2. A series of consultative regional workshops to develop a draft core curriculum (completed December, 1999).
3. Development of programme modules (in progress).
4. Briefing for key personnel from participating institutions on using the modules.
5. Conduct and evaluate a pilot programme in participating institutions.

Project Title / Description

Irish Association of University and College Counsellors (IAUCC)

Confederation of Student Services in Ireland (CSSI)

IAUCC is a professional association for counsellors in all third level institutions that was founded in 1980. It includes participants from colleges/universities both in the North and South since its conception. Its meetings are usually held in the South, but sometimes in the North. Initially, counsellors in the South invited counsellors in the North to consult with us as they were members of the Great Britain Association of Student Counsellors.

The IAUCC initiated the formation of the CSSI which is a professional association for all staff working in Student Services, North and South. Meetings of this organisation have taken place in the North and South.
