Project Title / Description

Crossborder analysis of deprivation, social wellbeing and health inequalities.

The core group has completed reports on cross border deprivation for the NI Voluntary Trust, and the Combat Poverty Agency. One report is being published with support from the Fund for Peace and reconciliation, along with a shorter summary report for community groups. The research team is currently engaged in a project to improve cross border access to primary health care for cooperation and working together (CAWT) an organisation for border area health authorities.

Project Title / Description

To develop an integrated geographical approach to the preliminary assessment of potential waste disposal sites.

The main objectives of the research is to investigate potential conduits of leachate by geographical techniques (resistry, magnetics, VLF, GPR) in order to possibly establish a code of practice. The project is funded by the EU; is eighteen months in duration; and is set to be completed by October 2000. Various geophysical equipment, modelling programs and drilling equipment is required. The project is not open to new collaborators.

Project Title / Description

A seasonal scale investigation of climate and environment in the lateglacial and Holocene times, in Britain and Ireland.

Scotland has some of the best preserved quaternary deposits in Europe, including many from the period between 15,000 years ago when the last Ice Age came to an end, to the present day when temperatures are warming rapidly. These deposits are rare on a global scale and as such as very valuable in that they potentially preserve a record of previous palaeotemperatures and paleoenvironments. Until now, most palaeoclimate investigations have been over a relatively coarse timescales of at least 1,000 years. Recent research (Purton & Braiser 1997) reveal intraannual palaeo temperature records from sea shells and similar highresolution geochemical techniques which are being applied to well preserved shells from the Late Glacial deposits, in this study. This data will provide an insight into palaeoenvironment and its seasonal variation in the marine shelf off NW Scotland at the end of the last glaciation and during the Holocene time period.

This project started in November 1997 and will finish in the summer of 2000. This project is open to new collaborators but more funding is necessary to continue this work. Thus far, many shells have been collected and analysed. This data is unique and provides a fascinating insight into the palaeoenvironment of the late Glacial and Holocene in NW Europe's marine shelf.

Funding was provided from personal funds along with a fellowship from the Irish HEA, as well as a basic research grant from Enterprise Ireland
