| Project Title / Description |
Variation in women's paid employment North and South. An invitation in Autumn 1995 by Chris Whelan of the Economic & Social Research Institute to work with Dr Sally Shortall on a joint paper North/South with a gender focus for British Academy Conference in Dec 1996 in Oxford. This involved a series of meetings with Dr Shortall, followed up by intense email contact/ working on rafts/presentation of coauthored paper in Oxford in 1996/ revision of it/and launch of book in QUB in 1999 (end of project). The outcome was a paper presented at Oxford Conference December 1995. Revised and submitted, and published as 'Does the Border make the difference? Variation in Women's Paid employment North and South' in Ireland: North and South edited by A Heath, R Breen and CT Whelan (1999) published for British Academy by Oxford University Press. |

It became clear that gender was far too broad so the study focused on one area in which broadly comparable material was available and where there was some expertise. A similar sort of approach was used by other 'pairs'. This kind of activity is illuminating; rarely done; quite difficult but very interesting. It required the initiative of the editors to set it up, and then the people involved took it from there. | ||
