| Project Title / Description |
The Irish Centre for the Transfer of Advanced Computing Technology (ICeTACT). In April 1997, the partnership between TCD and QUB and the Dublin Chamber of Commerce was established as a Technology Transfer Node (TTN) within the European network of high performance computing (HPC) technology transfer nodes. This network is supported by the European Commissions ESPRIT programme in IT for a three year period. There are in all 20 such nodes around Europe which aim to provide a support mechanism for business to adopt HPC. Within the network, there are 600 individual partners, 200 of which are small and medium companies. There are 160 demonstration projects funded. The aim of ICeTACT is to develop
and implement and HPC TTN in Ireland. Our focus has been to bring
HPC to small and medium companies in Ireland, and to disseminate
the results obtained across Europe through the TTN. ICeTACT's core activities are concentrated around awareness creation and dissemination, organising seminars and workshops. |

Development Potential |
The
network of HPC nodes will not be funded into the 5th framework
project but there are potential thematic Networks which
will include many of the current members. The activities of the centre and any knowledge will revert into the Trinity Centre for HPC. Collaborations between TCD and QUB will continue under the CSI (Centre for Supercomputing in Ireland). |

Centre for Supercomputing in Ireland During 1997/98, TCD and QUB embarked on a five year initiative in the area of advanced computing. The elements of this have so far required over £5m funding (Donor to TCD, TCD funds, HEA, EU, UK Government, QUB funds). This included the purchase and installation of a jointly owned IBM HPC system located in Belfast and the award and recruitment of HPC fellowships. This cross border and international collaboration has extensive educational, training, industrial linkage, and employment generation advantages for the two universities and their local economies. CSI has already enabled new funded research projects in 20 University departments, and has enabled new funded undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses. Outputs expected from CSI include 600 trained graduates enabling new startups, inward investment and new areas of opportunity for business. |

Spectral Theory of Positive Matrices This is a project initially in pure mathematics with applications to physics via the supercomputer. The pure mathematics study which was started two years ago is well underway and has already led to two publications. The resources required so far consist of travel/accommodation support Belfast/Dublin. It is now intended to apply the techniques discovered to problems involving large matrices in quantum physics. This will require time on the super computer. |

Several different projects with different titles. All in the general area of "Jordan Algebra in Analysis". With Prof. ChoHo Chu, University of London: Series of collaborations beginning
in 1994 original contact made at an international conference. Objective to study Jordan structures
in infinite dimensional complex analysis (mathematics). Resources available were travel accommodation costs, two grants from Enterprise Ireland, one grant from EPSRC U.R., Arts facility UCD, London Mathematical Society. With Dr M Mathieu, QUB. Research visits, seminars, attendance at small conferences. |

Classical Potential Theory Collaboration in writing a book on this theory. The collaboration was begun in 1995. A contract for the publication has been agreed with Springer. Submission date 30 April 2000. Help was required in producing camera ready mathematical typescript. Except for small amounts from departmental funds to pay for this typing, no funding was required for the project. |
