CRI was established in 1992 as an organisation of the heads of the nine Universities in Ireland. Its aim is to build on the existing relationships between the Universities in Ireland and to develop and expand further University linkages. A wide range of activities have been arranged to date, namely, staff and student exchanges, a conference and a book on national identities.

The Universities on the island of Ireland have a major role to play in generating dialogue not only among themselves but also Universities and the wider community. This dialogue should generate new ideas and possible solutions to the many issues facing the people of Ireland (North and South).

There are four issues that the Universities should examine. CRI has agreed to direct its activities over the next five years to an examination and advocacy of:
1) Economic regeneration;
2) Cultural literacy;
3) Tolerance;
4) Sharing information/resources.

Universities are willing to take a leadership role in generating discussion, developing analyses and proposing possible solutions to the many problems facing these islands. In order to do this the Universities wish to develop the possibility of and benefits of collaborative links among the nine internationally renowned universities on the island.

As Ireland (North and South) embraces the information age it will be important for the links with industry to be further enhanced and developed. And as the Peace Process develops it will be important that there is greater appreciation for the different cultures on this island. There are immense research possibilities on how Universities and the wider society have dealt with conflict resolution.

A full-time office has now been established with the appointment of Francis McGeough as Project Director. His brief is to facilitate the development of these collaborative links. Please feel free to contact him to discuss any ideas you may have for such links. His contact address is Conference of Rectors of Universities in Ireland, 10 Lower Mount Street, Dublin 2, telephone: + 353 1 6764948.
