A study in the sociology of bonding and the dynamics of group identities. This is a study into Protestant identities in Ireland, North and South.

Objective is to draw understanding of the dynamics of protestant identities.

A book regarding findings is under preparation.

UK/Ireland Student Flows

The study examines the pattern of change in the flows of undergraduate students between the Republic of Ireland, Northern Ireland and Great Britain in 1997, 1998 and 1999. Student application and admission data from the Central Application Office (CAO) and the Universities and Colleges Admission Services (UCAS) are analysed.

Project Title / Description

Values in Ireland, North & South:

The European Values Survey Within an Irish Context.

 

Aims of Project:

 

The inclusion of both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland as fully participant members of the 1999 European values study;

 

A detailed comparative analysis of socio-political values and attitudes within both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland;

 

The placement of the results within a British-Irish context;

 

A cross-national investigation of the findings within the context of attitudinal change within other European nations.

 

Funders of Project:

 

ESRC (£38,808), Royal Irish Academy (IR £9,506) and a private foundation in the Republic of Ireland that wishes to remain anonymous (IR£103,486).

 

Research Output:

 

Report to funders - due end of Summer.

Co-authored book - expected in year 2001.

Research Networks & Social Science Research Council of Royal Irish Academy

 

1992 - 1996 & 2000

 

A series of Research networks was established. These were funded by the RIA/and the British Council devoted to collaborative research and publication.

 

Several successful networks were established producing papers and facilitating further research funding.

 

Funding to be sought from Nuffield and other donors.
