Universities
The nine universities represented
in C.R.I. are as follows:-

Dublin City University [DCU]
Established as an independent
university under the Dublin City University Act 1989 and prior
to that was the National Institute of Higher Education, Dublin.

The National University of Ireland,
Galway [NUIG]
Established by royal charter
in 1845 as Queen's College, Galway. In 1908, as University College
Galway, it became a constituent college of the National University
of Ireland. Under the Universities' Act, 1997 it is now an independent
but constituent university of the National University of Ireland.

The National University of Ireland,
Maynooth [NUIM]
A constituent university of the
National University of Ireland it came into existence on 16 June,
1997 by virtue of the Universities' Act, 1997. It traces its
origins back to St. Patrick's College Maynooth, established in
1795 with which it continues to share its campus.

Queen's University of Belfast [QUB]
Established by Royal Charter
in 1845. It was linked with colleges at Cork and Galway as the
Queen's University in Ireland. In 1908 it became the Queen's
University of Belfast.

University College Cork [UCC]
Established by royal charter
in 1845 as Queen's College, Cork. In 1908 as University College
Cork it became a constituent college of the National University
of Ireland. Under the Universities' Act, 1997 it is now an independent
but constituent university of the National University of Ireland.

University College Dublin [UCD]
Originated in 1851 as the Catholic
University of Ireland. In 1879 as University College Dublin it
was incorporated within the Royal University of Ireland. It was
established by charter in 1908 as a constituent college of the
National University of Ireland. Under the Universities' Act,
1997 it is now an independent but constituent university of the
National University of Ireland.

The University of Dublin, Trinity College
[TCD].
Trinity College is the sole constituent
college of the University of Dublin. It was founded in 1592 as
a residential college on the model of an Oxford or Cambridge
college.

The University of Limerick [UL]
Established as an independent
university under the University of Limerick Act 1989 and prior
to that was the National Institute of Higher Education, Limerick.

University of Ulster [UU]
Established in 1984 as the result
of an amalgamation of the Ulster Polytechnic and the New University
of Ulster. It is a large multi-campus university operating at
Belfast, Jordanstown, Coleraine and Magee College, Londonderry.
